Questions about DNS-level ad and tracker blocking.
Last updated October 31, 2026.
How is this different from running Pi-hole myself?
Pi-hole requires you to own, configure, and maintain a device on your network. Harbor Privacy is a managed version of the same DNS-blocking approach — no hardware to buy or maintain, with parental controls and a personal dashboard included.
Do I need to install anything?
No hardware or router app. Setup takes about 60 seconds by pointing your devices or router at Harbor Privacy's DNS.
Does it work on phones and tablets away from home?
Yes, Harbor Remote applies network-level protection on every device wherever you are, not just at home.
Is my browsing history logged?
No. Harbor Privacy runs no-log DNS resolution across all plans.
Can I set up parental controls?
Yes. Harbor Remote includes Harbor Kids, which adds per-device content filtering for $3.99/mo.
Can my kid remove the profile or turn off the filtering?
Not if you lock it down. Harbor Kids includes a guided Screen Time setup right in your dashboard that ties profile removal to a passcode only you know — see our full guide for how it works.
How is this different from NextDNS or ControlD?
Harbor Privacy is built to be simpler to set up for a family, with a managed dashboard and no technical configuration required.
What is DNS ad blocking?
DNS ad blocking stops ads, trackers, and malware before they load by refusing to look up their domains. Because it works at the network level, it covers every device that uses it, including phones, smart TVs, and game consoles that cannot run browser extensions.
How much does Harbor Adblock cost?
Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial. Harbor Light is $1.99 per month for ad and tracker blocking. Harbor Remote is $3.99 per month, or $26.99 per year, and adds protection away from home and Harbor Kids. See the pricing page for current plans.
Does DNS blocking remove YouTube ads?
Not reliably. YouTube serves most video ads from the same domains as the videos, so DNS blocking cannot separate them. It does block many third-party ad networks, trackers, and malware domains across apps, smart TVs, and websites.
Is DNS ad blocking better than a browser extension?
They do different jobs. DNS blocking covers every device on the network, including ones with no extension support. Extensions can also hide elements inside a page. Many people use both. Harbor Blocker is a free Chrome extension that pairs with Harbor Adblock.
How do I check that Harbor Adblock is working?
Run the free Harbor DNS block test at harborprivacy.com/adblock-test. It tries to reach known ad, tracker, and malware domains from your browser and reports which ones your DNS blocked.
