Alexa Privacy Tips and Tricks
Alexa is handy, but it records and keeps more than most people realize. These tips cut the data collection while keeping the parts you actually use.
Delete and Stop Saving Recordings
Two quick voice commands and one settings change cover most of it.
Say it
Delete by voice"Alexa, delete what I just said" and "Alexa, delete everything I said today" work instantly.

App
Turn off human reviewTurn off Use of voice recordings to develop new features, so employees and contractors cannot review your clips.
Turn Off What You Don't Use
- Turn off voice purchasing, or at least set a purchase confirmation code.
- Turn off Drop In and unwanted announcements so the device cannot be used as an intercom into your home.
- Turn off Hunches and personalized suggestions if you would rather it not profile your routine.
Mute the Mic When You Want
Every Echo has a hardware mic-off button that physically cuts the microphone. Use it during sensitive conversations, or whenever you simply do not need Alexa listening.
Check Skill Permissions
- Review third-party skills for access to your location, address, and contacts.
- Disable skills you no longer use; each one is another company with a little of your data.
Common Questions
Is Alexa always listening?
It listens locally for the wake word and only streams to Amazon after it hears it. Accidental wakes do happen, which is why turning off saved recordings matters.
Can I use Alexa without it saving anything?
Yes. With Don't save recordings on, commands are processed and then discarded rather than stored to your account.
What about kids using the Echo?
Set up a kids profile with parental controls, and review what the household can do via Drop In and purchasing.
