Make Venmo and Cash App Private
Payment apps are convenient and leaky. Venmo in particular makes your activity public unless you change it. Here is the cleanup.
Make Your Transactions Private
Venmo defaults to a public feed that shows who you pay. Turn it off.
1
Set default to PrivateVenmo → Settings → Privacy → set default to Private.
2
Fix past transactionsPrivacy → Past Transactions → Change All to Private.
3
Hide your friends listTurn off the setting that shows your friends list to others.
Lock Down the App
- Turn on a PIN or biometric lock inside the app.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Review and remove linked devices and authorized merchants.
Limit What You Link
- Keep balances low; do not treat these apps as a bank.
- Where possible, link a credit card or a secondary account rather than your primary checking.
Avoid the Common Scams
- Personal payments have no buyer protection, treat them like cash.
- Ignore "accidental payment, please send it back" messages, a classic con.
- Never accept a payment from a stranger who then asks you to refund it.
Common Questions
Why is Venmo public by default?
It is built as a social app, so the feed is on unless you switch it off. There is no privacy reason for it; just turn it to Private.
Is PayPal more private than Venmo?
PayPal does not have a public feed, so it leaks less socially. All of them still collect transaction data, so keep balances low.
Can I get my money back from a scam?
Usually not on personal/friends-and-family payments. That is exactly why scammers prefer these apps.
