Set Up a Parent's Phone Safely

Setting up a phone for a parent is a chance to make it private and scam-resistant in one sitting. The goal is safety without clutter, so it stays easy for them to use.

Start With the Basics

1
Strong lock + biometricsSet a 6-digit passcode and turn on Face ID or fingerprint so it stays both secure and easy to open.
2
Automatic updatesTurn on automatic OS and app updates so security fixes install themselves.
3
Set up Medical ID & emergency contactsOn iPhone, fill in Medical ID; on Android, set emergency info. Both show on the lock screen in an emergency.

Turn On the Safety Nets

  • Set up Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) so a lost phone can be located.
  • With their okay, share location with a trusted family member.
  • Bump up text size and enable accessibility features that make it comfortable to use.

Privacy Without Overcomplicating

  • Turn on Silence Unknown Callers and carrier spam filtering.
  • Turn off app tracking and the advertising ID.
  • Keep only the apps they actually use, and remove preinstalled junk.
  • The full checklists are in our iPhone and Android setup guides.

Set Up Help-From-Afar Carefully

  • Use only trusted, known tools if you help remotely, and tell them clearly: nobody legitimate will ever phone and ask for remote access.
  • Consider a shared password manager for the logins you both need to manage.

Common Questions

iPhone or Android for an older parent?
Either works. Pick whatever their family uses, so there is someone nearby who can help. Familiarity matters more than the brand.
Should I have their passwords?
A shared password manager or a sealed written copy in a safe place is wise for emergencies, agreed on together, not taken behind their back.
How do I stop scam calls getting through?
Silence Unknown Callers plus the free carrier filter blocks the vast majority. See our spam and robocall guide.
