How to Stop Targeted Ads on Your Phone and Browser

Targeted ads follow you because trackers tie your activity to an ID. You cannot remove every ad, but a few settings and one network-level tool cut most of the profiling.

How Ad Targeting Works

Apps and sites embed trackers that report what you do, tied to an advertising ID or a cookie. Ad companies build a profile from that and sell space to advertisers who want people like you. Blocking the trackers and clearing the ID breaks the chain.

On Your Phone

01
iPhoneIn Settings, Privacy & Security, Tracking, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Then in Apple Advertising, turn off Personalized Ads.
02
AndroidIn Settings, Privacy, Ads, delete your advertising ID, and opt out of ads personalization.
03
Review app permissionsRemove location and contacts access from apps that do not need it.

On Your Accounts

01
GoogleOpen My Ad Center and turn off ad personalization. Pause or auto-delete Web & App Activity.
02
Facebook and InstagramReview your ad preferences and activity off Meta technologies, and turn off data sharing where offered.
03
Other accountsLook for ad personalization or interest-based ads in each service's privacy settings.

In Your Browser

Use a browser with tracking protection, clear cookies regularly, and add a content blocker. Also strip tracking parameters from links. See private browser setup and browser fingerprinting.

Block It Before It Loads

A DNS blocker refuses requests to known ad and tracker domains on every device, including apps and smart TVs with no settings of their own. See DNS ad blocker vs VPN. Harbor Adblock does this for your whole home network.

Common Questions

Will these settings remove all ads?
No. You will still see ads, but they will be less tailored, and fewer trackers will follow you.
Does a VPN stop targeted ads?
Not by itself. It hides your IP, but cookies, accounts, and advertising IDs still identify you.
Does Do Not Track work?
Sites are not required to honor it, so it has little effect.
Why do I see ads for things I only talked about?
Usually it comes from searches, location, and data brokers, not the microphone. Reducing tracking is still the fix.
Can data brokers feed targeted ads?
Yes. Removing yourself from broker lists reduces profiling. See the data brokers guide.
