How to Set Up a VPN on iPhone, Step by Step

Setting up a VPN on an iPhone takes a few minutes. There are two routes: a VPN app such as WireGuard, or the built-in IKEv2 option that needs no app.

Option 1: A VPN App (WireGuard)

01
Install the appDownload WireGuard from the App Store.
02
Get your configCreate a device in your VPN account and choose WireGuard. Scan the QR code from the WireGuard app, or import the config file.
03
Allow the VPN configurationTap Allow when iOS asks to add a VPN configuration.
04
ConnectSwitch the tunnel on. A VPN icon appears in the status bar.

Option 2: Built-In IKEv2 (No App)

Some VPNs provide an IKEv2 profile you can install straight into iOS. Open the profile, install it in Settings, then turn on the VPN from Settings, General, VPN & Device Management. It is the quickest setup, though it is easier for a strict network to block.

Make It Connect Automatically

In the WireGuard app, open the tunnel, choose On-Demand Activation, and pick when it should run: on Wi-Fi, on cellular, or both. You can exclude your home Wi-Fi by name so the VPN stays off there. This keeps you protected without remembering to switch it on.

Check That It Works

01
Look at your IP addressSearch for your IP in a browser. It should show the VPN server, not your home connection.

Common Questions

Does iPhone have a built-in VPN?
iOS includes support for IKEv2 and other protocols, but you still need a provider and a profile. There is no built-in free VPN.
Which VPN app is best for iPhone?
WireGuard is a good default: fast, light on battery, and open source.
Will a VPN drain my iPhone battery?
A little. WireGuard uses the least of the common protocols.
Can I keep the VPN on all the time?
Yes. Use On-Demand Activation in the WireGuard app and exclude networks you trust.
Do I need a VPN on cellular too?
Cellular is encrypted to the tower but your carrier sees your traffic. A VPN hides it from the carrier as well.
