VPN Won't Connect? How to Troubleshoot It

When a VPN refuses to connect, the cause is usually your network, a stale config, or a block on the VPN's port. This checklist goes from the quickest checks to the less common ones.

Start With the Basics

01
Check your normal internetTurn the VPN off and load a page. If that fails, fix the connection first.
02
Toggle the VPN and restart the appMany stalls clear with a fresh start.
03
Check the date and timeA wrong clock can break the handshake. Turn on automatic time.
04
Check you are not on two VPNsOther VPNs, some security apps, and some DNS profiles conflict. Turn the others off.

Test a Different Network

Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular. If the VPN works on one and not the other, the first network is blocking it. Hotels, schools, offices, and some home routers block common VPN ports or all UDP traffic. See VPN blocked on Wi-Fi for what to do.

Check the Config

01
Re-import the profileDelete the tunnel and import the config or QR code again. An old or edited config is a common cause.
02
Check it matches the appA WireGuard config needs the WireGuard app, and an AmneziaWG config needs the Amnezia app.
03
Try another protocolIf WireGuard fails, try OpenVPN over TCP, IKEv2, or a stealth mode.
04
Make sure the device is still activeIf you removed the device or hit your device limit, its key stops working.

Connected but Nothing Loads

If the tunnel shows connected but pages will not load, it is usually DNS or MTU. Turn off any private DNS or DoH setting that overrides the VPN's DNS, and try an MTU of 1280. Stealth modes carry TCP only, so HTTP/3 over UDP also stalls. Turn off HTTP/3 or QUIC in the browser.

Still Stuck

Note the exact error message, which network you were on, and which protocol and app you used, then contact your provider. Harbor VPN customers can email support@harborprivacy.app.

Common Questions

Why does my VPN connect and then drop?
Weak signal, a network that cuts idle connections, or a missing keepalive. Try a lower MTU and a persistent keepalive of 25 seconds.
Why does my VPN work on cellular but not Wi-Fi?
The Wi-Fi network is blocking the VPN's port or UDP traffic.
Why does the VPN say connected but I have no internet?
Usually a DNS or MTU problem. Disable custom DNS or DoH and lower the MTU.
Should I reinstall the app?
Re-importing the config fixes most issues. Reinstall only if the app itself misbehaves.
Can my router block a VPN?
Yes. Some routers block VPN passthrough or specific ports. Test on another network to find out.
NEED A VPN THAT WORKS ON BLOCKED NETWORKS?

Harbor VPN has four protocols plus a Stealth mode for networks that block VPNs. See Harbor VPN.
