Why Is My VPN Slow? 8 Fixes That Work

Every VPN adds some overhead, but a good one should feel close to normal. If yours crawls, the cause is usually one of a handful of things.

Why a VPN Slows You Down

Your traffic takes a detour through the VPN server, and encryption adds a little work. The slowdown comes from distance to the server, the protocol, how busy the server is, and limits on your side or the provider's.

Fixes, In Order

01
Test without the VPNRun a speed test with the VPN off. If your base connection is slow, the VPN is not the problem.
02
Switch to WireGuardIt is lighter and faster than OpenVPN or IKEv2. See which protocol to use.
03
Move closer to the serverDistance adds latency. A nearer server is faster.
04
Change networksTry cellular instead of Wi-Fi, or the 5 GHz band. Some Wi-Fi throttles encrypted traffic.
05
Lower the MTUOn weak signal, a smaller MTU such as 1280 avoids fragmented packets that stall the tunnel.
06
Restart the tunnelToggle the VPN off and on, or restart the device, to clear stuck connections.
07
Check for a bandwidth capMany providers limit speed per device. Harbor VPN caps each device at 30 Mbps, which handles browsing, calls, and most streaming.
08
Close heavy background appsCloud backups and updates compete for the same capped link.

What Speed to Expect

A well-run VPN on WireGuard typically loses a small share of your base speed on a nearby server. If you lose more than half, something is wrong with the route, the network, or a cap, and the steps above will find it.

Common Questions

Which VPN protocol is fastest?
WireGuard is usually the fastest, then IKEv2, then OpenVPN.
Does a closer server always help?
Mostly. Latency drops with distance, but a busy nearby server can be slower than a quiet farther one.
Why is my VPN fast on Wi-Fi but slow on cellular?
Carriers handle encrypted UDP traffic differently, and signal quality varies. Try a lower MTU or a different protocol.
Does the VPN's DNS slow things down?
A slow resolver makes pages start slowly, but not large downloads. Harbor routes DNS through its own resolver on the same server.
Is a speed cap normal?
Yes. Providers cap speeds to keep the service stable and affordable. Check the limits before you buy.
TRY HARBOR VPN

WireGuard speed with a 30 Mbps cap per device, enough for browsing, video calls, and most streaming. See Harbor VPN.
