VPN vs Proxy vs Tor: Which Should You Use?
All three hide your IP address from the sites you visit. They differ in what else they protect, how fast they are, and who sees your traffic.

VPN
Encrypts all traffic from your device to the VPN server, for every app. Fast enough for streaming and calls. You trust the provider, since it can see where your traffic goes. Best for everyday privacy and public Wi-Fi.
Proxy
Forwards traffic from one app or browser through another server, hiding your IP. Most proxies do not encrypt anything, and each app needs its own setup. Best for a quick, low-stakes change of address, not for privacy.
Tor
Sends your traffic through three volunteer relays, so no single relay knows both who you are and where you go. It gives the strongest anonymity of the three, but it is slow and some sites block it. Best for high-risk situations, not daily streaming.
Side by Side
- Encrypts all traffic: VPN yes, proxy usually no, Tor yes inside its network.
- Speed: VPN fast, proxy fast, Tor slow.
- Who you trust: VPN provider, proxy operator, Tor relays spread across volunteers.
- Works for every app: VPN yes, proxy per app, Tor through the Tor Browser or a configured app.
