How to Send a Fax Online Without an Account
Some things still have to be faxed: medical records, insurance forms, legal paperwork. You do not need a fax machine or a monthly subscription to send one. You do need to know what happens to your documents afterward.

How Online Faxing Works
An online fax service takes your file, converts it to a fax transmission, and calls the destination fax number for you. The recipient's machine prints it as a normal fax. You need only the document and the recipient's number.
Sending One, Step by Step
What to Check Before You Upload
- Do you need an account? Many services require one, then keep a record of every fax you send.
- How long is the document kept? Some services store faxes for months or years. For anything sensitive you want it deleted at delivery.
- Is there a subscription? Monthly plans make sense if you fax weekly. For a one-off, pay per fax.
- Is it safe for health information? See below.
Faxing Medical Information
Medical offices still rely on fax. Under HIPAA, a service that only transmits your document and keeps no copy can qualify for the conduit exception, the same category as a phone company, and then it does not need a Business Associate Agreement. A service that stores your faxes does hold your data and is treated differently. Ask before you send. See Medical Data Privacy for more.
Tips for a Clean Fax
- Use high-contrast, black-and-white pages. Faxes are low resolution.
- Keep signatures dark and away from page edges.
- Call the recipient to confirm they got it if it matters.
- Save your own copy and delivery confirmation.
