What Is Plaid and Is It Safe to Link Your Bank?
When a budgeting or payment app asks you to link your bank, the connection often runs through a company you have never heard of. Here is what that means.

What Plaid Is
Plaid is a data aggregator. Apps use it to connect to your bank so they do not have to build that connection themselves. MX and others do the same job. You sign in to your bank through the aggregator's screen, and it pulls your data and passes it to the app.
What They Can Access
Depending on what you approve, an aggregator can read account and routing numbers, balances, and transaction history, often going back a long time. The app you linked, and the aggregator, both end up holding some of that data.
The Risks
- A central target. Aggregators hold data from many banks and apps, which makes them a prize for attackers.
- Credentials. Some connections still use your bank login rather than a limited token.
- Lingering access. A connection can stay active after you stop using the app.
- Data reuse. Terms may let the app or aggregator use the data beyond what you expect.
